Digital platform aims to speed up early-stage ground movement assessments

A2 Engine has launched a digital platform designed to help engineers assess potential ground movements during the early stages of construction projects.

Called Gemma, the software generates outline assessments for projects involving basements, retaining walls and deep excavations, providing an early indication of the possible impact on neighbouring structures before more detailed analysis is carried out.

The platform has been developed to support feasibility studies, where engineers often need to compare multiple design options and evaluate potential risks before a preferred solution is selected. Users can define excavation geometry, adjust key design parameters and rapidly compare alternative scenarios using established engineering methods.

According to A2 Engine, Gemma considers ground movements associated with both excavation and new building construction, including complex excavation geometries such as re-entrant corners, which can be difficult to assess using conventional preliminary methods.

‘Early-stage project development often involves numerous design iterations as proposals evolve,’ said A2 Engine director Domenico Lombardi. ‘Engineers can spend considerable time repeating preliminary assessments before a preferred solution is established.’

‘Gemma has been developed to streamline that process, allowing engineers to obtain an initial understanding of potential ground movements almost instantly while retaining detailed analysis for the later stages of design.’

The company says the software is intended to support, rather than replace, detailed numerical modelling and engineering judgement by helping engineers identify potential constraints and determine where more detailed investigation may be required.

The launch reflects the growing use of digital tools to automate routine engineering tasks, enabling engineers to evaluate options more quickly while focusing their expertise on interpretation, optimisation and risk management.
