Institution of Mechanical Engineers launches new season of its student engineering competitions

October 8, 2024 by Geordie Torr

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has launched the new season of its student engineering competitions.

Each year sees hundreds of students take part in the Railway and UAS challenges, providing them with the chance to work on an exciting engineering project that is as close to the real world as it gets. Participants develop practical skills and experiences that complement their academic studies while gaining valuable links with industry through mentorships and placements that all serve to enhance their employment opportunities across multiple engineering sectors.

The Railway Challenge continues to bring together teams of university students, as well as apprentices and graduates working in industry across the world, to test their business knowledge, design ability and technical skills to design and manufacture a miniature (10¼-inch gauge) railway locomotive. All teams test their locomotives live at the competition weekend every June at Stapleford Miniature Railway.

Organised by the institution’s Railway Division, it provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring teams to compete in a challenging industry-specific competition, showcasing their skills, expertise, knowledge and business acumen.

Launched in 2014, the annual UAS Challenge brings together teams of undergraduates from all over the world. Student teams undertake a full design and build life-cycle of an autonomous unmanned aerial system (UAS) with a maximum take-off mass of ten kilograms to undertake specific mission objectives, culminating in a final fly-off event in July the following year, in which teams demonstrate their UAS and have their design work and business cases evaluated in formal presentations.

Registration closes on 1 November 2024. For more details and to register for the Railway Challenge, click here; for the UAS Challenge, click here.
