Light-powered nanorobots can collect and move bacteria

August 25, 2026 by Grace Gourlay

Working with individual bacteria presents an obvious engineering problem: the tools used to manipulate them need to operate on roughly the same scale. Researchers at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) have now developed light-powered nanorobots small enough to move through this microbial world and physically interact with the bacteria around them. The devices … [Read more...] about Light-powered nanorobots can collect and move bacteria

New catalyst could make fuel cells more practical for data centres

August 10, 2026 by Grace Gourlay

Data centres have an appetite for electricity. Servers need power around the clock, cooling systems need still more, and as artificial intelligence drives demand for computing upwards, finding enough electricity to keep everything running is becoming an engineering problem in its own right. Hydrogen fuel cells offer one possible answer. Rather than drawing all their … [Read more...] about New catalyst could make fuel cells more practical for data centres

AI-driven analysis reveals new proteins from the deep ocean

July 7, 2026 by Grace Gourlay

A study published in Nature has mapped millions of genes from deep-sea microorganisms collected at hydrothermal vents, methane seeps and deep-ocean trenches. The work revealed an unexpected level of genetic diversity, with researchers reporting that more than 60% of the proteins identified had not previously appeared in public DNA databases. Finding them was only part of the … [Read more...] about AI-driven analysis reveals new proteins from the deep ocean
